COVID-19 has altered the healthcare landscape.
Driven by fears of viral exposure, surgical patients have avoided hospitals and delayed elective procedures. The pandemic is poised to accelerate outpatient migration, which has been fueled by industry consolidation and reimbursement changes, among other influencing factors. ASC leaders need to position their organizations to capitalize on these trends in order to thrive in the years to come. While there will be considerable opportunity to increase patient volumes in the ASC space in the months ahead, leaders are likely to encounter a host of obstacles along the way. These challenges may include difficulties related physician recruitment, payer contracting and adapting to shifting regulations. Since the first ambulatory surgery center was established in 1970, ASCs have never been more important to patients and the overall healthcare system. Join us for Becker's first-ever ASC Leadership Virtual Forum to participate in future-focused conversations on how ASCs can survive and thrive in the 2020s.

The growth in outpatient hip and spine procedures presents a significant opportunity for multispecialty surgery centers. In this lively discussion, we’ll explore key considerations for bringing total joints and spine procedures into your multispecialty ASC. You’ll hear from a CEO and two surgeons from high- volume multispecialty ASCs offering spine and total joint procedures. Topics covered in this session: - The big 6 C's to consider in developing a total joints and/or spine program - The surgeon's perspective on what to look for in joining an ASC - A few quick tips on patient flow, patient communication, and operational efficiency

The COVID-19 crisis has created the need to quickly reposition and redesign operations to make up for losses incurred from the lost time with patients and increased operational costs. During this session, you will learn how ASCs have embraced artificial intelligence, business process reengineering, and analytics to improve efficiency, reduce costs, enhance quality, shorten reimbursement cycles to achieve: - 20% APC weight increase - 15% wRVU increase - Improved billing velocity from days to hours - 77% unbilled balance reduction
Matthew Thom, MD, FACS, Urologist, DCH Health
Ken Kolenik, Director, Product Management, Nuance Healthcare
COVID-19 left millions of uninsured patients in its wake. Many patients have deferred care, and it may take some time for volumes to return. Patients who are moving forward with elective surgeries often research provider and facility ratings to help them choose where they will go for care. “The unseen patient” is the patient who chooses an alternative provider. Capturing documentation details that accurately reflect severity of illness and risk factors have a dual impact on reputation and reimbursement. Learning objectives During this session, you will learn: - Where patients are going to research provider and facility ratings; - How facilities and providers are rated; - Strategies that you can use to make sure your scores accurately reflect patient acuity and the level of care provided.
Cathy Gorman-Klug, RN, MSN, CPM, Produce Manager, Nuance Healthcare
Key measures to keep patients and staff during the COVID pandemic are being questioned across the country because of the diversity of regulations, recommendations and opinions. Leaders need to know how to sort through these and ensure that their organization are not only meeting regulatory requirement but ensuring the safety of their patients and staff. These choices will not only impact the bottom from an expense standpoint but a revenue standpoint if patients decide they do not feel safe while receiving, care treatment, and services. An overview of how to approach critical regulatory requirements, recommendations and ultimately make decisions about safety will be covered.
Sylvia Garcia-Houchins, RN, MBA, CIC, Director, Infection Prevention and Control, The Joint Commission
The increasing shift of surgical procedures from hospitals to ASC’s is having a dramatic impact on the ASC market. Financial valuations for ASC’s depend more and more on an ASC’s surgical capacity and on offering a variety of specialties. Reimbursement for additional procedures is providing a platform for growth, and this will fuel expansion and acquisitions. What can you do to build a bridge to a successful, profitable future? In this session, we will explore several strategies for accelerating your ASC’s growth, so that you can be in the best position possible in this rapidly shifting market.
Jeff Peters, Chief Executive Officer, Surgical Directions
Cardiovascular surgeries are projected to dramatically increase over the next few years. Further, more cardiovascular surgeries are being approved for ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). This is driven by a multitude of factors, including cost savings for patients and payers, convenience and comfort for patients and physicians, and advancements in medical technologies that result in high quality outcomes.
